In keeping with this challenge, our assignment was an
incredible human adventure. With nothing comparitive,
on this scale to go by, we had to move step by step,
clearing the way, using specific tools adapted to the
job, managing the extremely complex logistics aspects
and in particular carefully validating each stage of
construction to ensure the structural integrity of the
building. We had to abandon our preconceived ideas and
adopt a “project” approach in which each participant
contributed their skills, expertise and questions
through open discussion. Having established a spirit of
trust we were able to organise everyone’s intellectual
contributions and know-how into a logical sequence,
within a timeframe and budget that allowed us to move
ahead without any major problems.
I was fortunate to work with a team of a dozen relatively
young men and women who were totally committed
to the project. We were thrilled to act as the project
manager through to the delivery of the new, renamed
First Tower. I have fond memories of that period. At the
end we were proud of what we had achieved and sad to
see the adventure come to an end.
