Athens metro – Greece

Sogelerg excels in the fields of transport,

          industry and healthcare

The CGE became majority shareholder of the Alcatel group in 1966 and of Alsthom in 1969. It began to
make Sogelerg the central pivot for the other consulting engineering firms that it had acquired through
these operations. Sogelerg was thus allied with Sogreah and Sedim, subsidiaries of Alsthom and Alcatel
respectively. Employing around 50 people, Sedim (Société d'études et de développement des industries
modernes) specialised in the building sector and had recognised expertise in hospital engineering.
Beginning in 1986, a holding company named Sogelerg-Sogreah was gradually constituted to manage
these engineering activities. It had a staff of 850 people and existed up to 1998, when the CGE, renamed
Alcatel-Alsthom, decided to concentrate on a single activity, telecommunications, and sold Sogelerg to
the Thalès group, while Sogreah was bought out by its management through an LMBO.
During this period, Sogelerg gained a reputation for high-quality engineering services in its chosen
fields. It produced energy development plans and carried out design studies for thermal power plants
in countries including Egypt, Algeria, Indonesia, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia.
It continued to provide design and construction supervision services for factories and became French
leader in the modernisation of abattoirs and fish markets via its specialist department (Setif). In the
1990s, Sogelerg also became very active in the sectors of life sciences (pharmaceuticals and research
laboratories) and microelectronics (clean rooms). Boosted by Sedim’s teams, it also became a major
player in hospital engineering in France and took part in the construction of several tertiary-sector
buildings (administration, justice, culture) such as the Louvre Museum and Georges Pompidou European
hospital in Paris, the European Parliament building in Strasbourg, and Ain Sham hospital in Cairo.
